Yes they are there! After eleven different drama festivals in Ulster during March, the 32 entries have been adjudicated and whittled down to six teams. All the successful teams have won at least one festival outright  The standard as usual is very high and each of the plays will be worthwhile attending.

If you didn’t get the chance to see the Bart Players performance of Lennox Robinson’s light comedy ‘Drama At Inish’ maybe 23rd April is your opportunity. If you’ve already seen it, The Silken Thomas’s (recent winners of AUDF Finals) production ‘The History Boys’ by Alan Bennet which was such a recent West End success is getting rave reviews and the other shows will all be of high quality.

Theatre at The Mill at Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey is a brand new state-of-the-art theatre and should be an enjoyable experience for both Drama groups and audiences alike.

A dramatic society is assembling on the stage of a church hall to rehearse a production of a mystery-thriller.

The director’s wife Margaret is friendlier than is wise with the young man of the group, prompting the sleazy new caretaker to undertake a little blackmail. He appears to be known already, for some reason, by another of the members, Pheobe.There is also a “prowler” in the neighbourhood who attacks ladies, one of them being a group member, attacked on the way to rehearsal.

The rehearsal proceeds under difficulties until a mysterious death brings the situation of the whodunit even more closely into real life. It transpires that almost everyone might, and could have, committed the murder — eventually the identity of both killer and prowler is revealed.

Knock Drama warmly invites you to “Jack and The Beanstalk” on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th January 2010 in Knock Presbyterian Church, Church Hall, Kings Road, Belfast

The story tells of a boy named Jack who was sent to the market one day by his mother to sell their last possession, the cow. As Jack proceeded to the market he met a stranger who offered to trade five “magic beans” for the cow. Jack accepted the trade and returned back home with the beans in his pocket. Jack’s mother was angered that he had not obeyed her instructions to sell the cow and threw the beans out of the window.

The earliest printed edition which has survived is the 1807 book The History of Jack and the Bean Stalk, printed by Benjamin Tabart, although the story was already in existence sometime before this, as a burlesque of the story entitled The Story of Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean was included in the 1734 second edition of Round About Our Coal-Fire.

All when well! Break a leg!

Following their return to the Churches Drama League in 2008, members of the cast & crew of the production of “The Diary of Anne Frank” celebrated their success winning a host of awards including Best Actor for George Smyth, Most Promising New Actor (Marina Hampton) and a host of other awards including Certificate of Merit for Direction, Certificate of Merit for Acting, Commendation for Set Design, The Doreen Muskett Cup for Best Theatrical Moment, and 2nd overall in the annual competition.

This years competition, held in April 2009, proved to be equally successful bring home the Cup for Best Actress (Nicola Cherry) and a Merit for Comedic Performance (Niall Ringrow and Simon Macartney). Maria Hampton was on winning form again with an award for Best Supporting Actress. Other awards included The Committee Cup for back stage production and a Merit for Premiere Performance by Richard Vaughan.
